A Verb is a word that describes actions or a state of being, this means that they signify the part of the sentence which explains the action taking place.
Verbs are words that give the idea of an action, the act of doing something.
(playing the guitar) (dance every Wednesday) (eats his dinner quickly)
Example:
- Ian likes to play the guitar.
- Samantha made a mess of her bedroom.
- James likes to dance every Wednesday.
- Dad went to buy some milk.
- Mark eats his dinner quickly.
However, some verbs do not give the idea of action; they give the idea of existence, of a state of ‘being’ (that’s feeling something).
Example:
The word like in the sentence, “the monster likes roller coasters”.
Alternatively, a verb can be used to describe an occurrence, that is something that is happening.
(Caterpillar became a butterfly)
Example:
The word ‘became’ in the sentence “the caterpillar became a butterfly”.
